Online poker is nothing short of an internet phenomenon with lots of tournaments available for you to watch and learn. You can even qualify to play for some of these incredibly rich poker tournaments if you gain enough points from some online tournaments. Many newcomers to the game find it difficult to learn how to improve their poker game (yes, there is a lot of skill involved) without losing a bunch of cash.

That’s where free poker games come in. You can practice, practice and practice some more without losing any money at all. Poker is just like any other game, hobby or pastime – the more you play the more you learn and the better you will become.

A Word of Warning

Having said that, it’s important that you don’t get too carried away. The free poker rooms are a terrific place to practice but, at the end of the day you are playing against other people who are practicing too. You will find a big difference between the skills and tactics of people playing in the free casino games than those who play with the big money stakes.

Poker Hand Rankings

One of the most difficult things which some newcomers find to grasp is the hand rankings. Which hands are actually the best and which can be beaten by a variety of others?  Here’s a quick guide to the hand rankings for Texas Hold ‘Em with the best hands at the top of the pile, just like it should be.

Royal Straight Flush – this is the best you can get and consists of an ace, king, queen, jack and ten of the same suit. It comes up pretty rarely but if it does it’s a winner.

Straight Flush – for this you need a run of five consecutive cards of the same suit, the numbers can start and end anywhere just so long as they run consecutively.

Four of a Kind – Four cards of the same number, any number at all. If someone has four fives and another player has four sevens the sevens will win.

Full House – this is the next best thing. For this you need any three of one kind and a pair of another – perhaps three x tens and a pair of fives.

Flush – this hand has cards of any denomination, just so long as all five are in the same suit without any sequence.

Straight – this is a run of five consecutive cards of two or more suits. If two or more players have a straight the one with the highest ranking numbers will win the hand.

Three of a Kind – is pretty self explanatory, three cards of one kind with any other two cards alongside.

Two Pair – this is the hand which ranks the next. This can be two pairs of any numbers.

One Pair – any two cards which are of the same rank alongside three other random cards.

Playing free poker games online will help you to remember these in time.
